Saqqara Step Pyramid

The Step Pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Djoser, is located in the village of Saqqara in Egypt. It was built about 4,700 years ago. This pyramid is known to be the first pyramid built by the Egyptians. It was built during the reign of King Djoser, who ruled Egypt as part of the Third Dynasty of Egypt. The pyramid’s design is attributed to the architect Imhotep, and it was built using 330,400 cubic meters of stone and clay. The pyramid also contains tunnels underneath it that form a maze approximately 5.5 kilometers long.

Pyramid construction stages

The way the pyramid was built has been examined by scientists, and it has been shown that the process of building the pyramid since ancient times has gone through several stages and witnessed some wrong beginnings. The pyramid began in the form of a square-shaped mastaba, then it was changed to a rectangular shape, as it seems that the engineer Imhotep began by building a simple tomb topped by a six-meter-high rectangular building called a mastaba, but he decided to increase the height and change it to a pyramid.

Djoser Pyramid Complex

The Pyramid of Djoser is at the heart of a complex of structures surrounded by a rectangular stone wall. The buildings in this complex form a line of shrines, some fake buildings, high-ceilinged walls, and several courtyards, including the Great Court, which lies to the south of the pyramid. The pyramid is located near the center, and is completed by the southern tomb. The complex also includes underground storage rooms, and numerous galleries and passages, most of which were not discovered until the 19th century. A temple is located on the north side of the pyramid, containing a statue of the king. This statue is surrounded by a small stone structure known as the crypt, which is distinguished by its eyes floating through a hole. There is also an altar to the side of the pyramid, and several stones that are identified as boundary markers.

Pyramid Overview

A pyramid can be defined as a polyhedron whose base is a regular polygon, while its lateral faces are triangles. It is worth noting that there are two types of pyramids: the right pyramid, in which all the triangles are identical, and the top of the pyramid is exactly opposite the center of the base, and the slanted pyramid, in which the top is not exactly opposite the center of the base. It is worth noting that the pyramid is named according to the shape of its base. If the base is square, the pyramid is known as a quadrilateral pyramid. If its base is triangular, the pyramid is known as a triangular pyramid. If the base is pentagonal, the pyramid is then known as a pentagonal pyramid, and so on.
